Hi folks, Cooper Hawkes here rested, awake, and sort of at 100% gaming capabilities to bring you today’s PlayStation news for 10/31/05:
Item One: Gamespot: PS3 to run at 120fps?
Appearing at the Tokyo International Digital Conference on Thursday to talk about the technological capabilities of the PlayStation 3 and the Cell processor, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi said he expects the PS3 to be capable of running games at a stunning 120fps, according to a report in The Nikkei BP.
(sigh) More marketing bullshit. Memo to Sony: For gods sakes stop talking about what “Could be and start talking about “What is because you have less than 3 weeks before your competition release’s its console!
Seriously, one: At best the human eye can discern 30 fps, (At best) also there ARE no TV’s right now that are capable of 120fps. I understand your trying to get the power of your system across in easy (sound bitable) terms, but let’s not start talking down to our audience.
I’m waiting for the “PS3 will make your penis appear bigger campaign at the rate this is going.
Item Two: Joystiq: PS3 in 2007: BBC hooked, lined, sinkered on PS3 launch date
According to this BBC News coverage of the Digital Life Expo in NYC several weeks ago, the PlayStation 3 is going to launch in 2007. Here’s the quote: “By launching its new Xbox 360 22 months ahead of the PlayStation 3, it’s hoping it’ll be able to win over the minds and money of gamers.
Not a snowball’s chance in hell. Seriously I’ll be able to get Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Anniston to “perform for me before Sony will release their game console AFTER Christmas 2006.
Sony can talk Xbox 1.5 all they want. They know that the Xbox 360 can be a viable threat, and the only way to neutralize said threat is to come out 6 months after it launches. The ol’ “Wait for us, it’ll be worth it! deal.
Right now Sony has three absolutes: 1) It must have a Blu-Ray Drive. 2) It must be backward compatible. 3) It must release within 6 months of the Xbox 360.
Anything less than that, is a couple of million units unsold. Mark my words. A tremendously late release (Considering it would then be AFTER the Revolution release) would mean that developers would want to put development costs into a console with the highest market share. By 2007 it’s entirely possible that Xbox 360 and Revolution could be sharing 20 to 30 million in market share, and that’s quite a number to have to play catch up to. Just ask the Xbox.
Seriously, I call bullshit on this as well. You’ll see a PS3 release in 2006 no matter what.
And that’s today’s news.
