I believe that the time has come for yet another rant. As you can see, I've now titled my rants and if you don't like it, well you know what you can do ;) Today's rant topic is whether or not the gaming industry really needs a GTA sequel....so GTA fanboys get your flame-throwers ready because you are probably going to hate me......

I say the best thing for the game industry right now is for Take-Two to cut it's ties with Rockstar and sell them to another publisher. My reasoning behind this comes from a couple of viewpoints. First and foremost Take-Two is losing money about as fast as a cheetah with it's tail on fire and one good way of rectifying that is to sell off one of your biggest assets which in turn has become your biggest headache as of late. If Take-Two were to take a chance on another GTA, sure it might sell a boatload of copies and help turn a profit for the company but what if there is another controversy that occurs and they have to pull yet another game off the shelves, fix it, and republish it once again. They, in my opinion, could not withstand another debacle like that without going under. Secondly, Take-Two has some strong franchises that they have recently acquired, thanks to their deals with Bethesda and Firaxis (Elder Scrolls and Civilization respectively) along with their strong 2k Sports lineup. I would rather take my chances with less controversial franchises that appeal to a wide variety of people and do not trigger lawsuits from unhappy politicians, parents, etc... I'm not saying who is wrong or right in said suits, but from a company standpoint why take the chance of something completely blowing up in your face when you have other strong games that could eventually pull you out of the hole without relying on one franchise which could either make you king of the gaming industry or lead you to exile. With the GTA series, I feel that you will either get rich or die trying. I don't see any middle-ground whatsoever. Which brings me to my next point...does the game industry really need a GTA sequel???

I say no, it doesn't. I think that in order to get this label of gamers being immature and immoral that we need to take steps to show that we aren't what the stereotypes say we are. When we rush to defend games like GTA but let games like Psychonauts fall into gamer oblivion, we as gamers, should be ashamed of ourselves. How many games like GTA have we had in the past few years and they sell like hotcakes almost every single time. Then you have games that try to be original like Psychonauts and Beyond Good & Evil but we turn our noses up at those because we deem those to look like kid's game just because of the graphical style that is being used. We believe that just because a game uses foul language, blood, and let's you do anything you want, it's a revolutinary title which is just utter bullshit. I'm tired of the cookie-cutter action games....you're one guy or thug in this huge city and you can do anything you want thing is getting old. I'm waiting for the day when GTA will be received just as well as Doom 3 was, with a collective MEH! The graphics of Doom 3 were great but nothing was added to the FPS genre and the story quite frankly sucked. The one good thing about the GTA games is that the story has always been solid but I don't know how many times you can rehash the missions in that type of game before it loses it's luster. Another thing that bothers me with GTA is the fact that no matter what crime you commit, it's very easy for you to get away and most of the time, the cops just stop looking for you. Everyone likes to claim how GTA is so realistic in how you can do anything you want but the realism just isn't there folks. If you want realistic than how about everytime you go to jack a car then there's a good chance the door is locked or said driver might have a gun in the glove compartment. How about the cops aren't going to just forget about you just because you drove around the city avoiding them for five minutes. The list goes on and on...and yes I know it's a game and it should be fun but I just think there are more ways of creating a fun game then having the ability to steal and kill people at random.

I loved the GTA games and they were groundbreaking but I think it's time to move on, get creative, and do something else. I believe that we as gamers have a responsibility to speak with our wallets and show these companies that they can't just shovel us the same games with a different story, more foul language, and more blood. We need them to know that we want something original, tasteful, but still made for adults. I wouldn't be as outraged by this if it was just GTA and then several other original game ideas on the store shelves but all I see for the most part, is GTA along with several GTA wanna-be's, each more over the top than the last. This shit must stop! You are going to blame the game companies for this but I won't, I blame you the gamer and your fellow casual brethren. As long as we keep putting dollars in their pockets for this crap then they are going to continually give it to us. You've already killed two genres that I loved, adventure and flight sims because they just weren't bloody enough or they were too "kid-friendly" or maybe it's because those games actually required you to f'n think. I'm tired of these games that basically hold your hand and tell you exactly where to go and what to do. Back when I first started gaming, we were given maps and a nice thick manual with our games so that we could use those to help us through the game instead of the game itself telling us exactly where to go or what to do. How many criminals do you know that have a GPS tracker???

Maybe there should be a sequel to GTA someday but I think they should seriously think about putting it on a hiatus for a little while and try to come up with something new. Rockstar is one of the most groundbreaking developers and it would a shame to see them gone down in flames because they rode one franchise a little too long.

Go ahead flame me, I don't care......

So because people label us as immature, that means we should just stop buying and playing the games we love in order to go against the stereotype?? Sounds kind've dumb if you ask me. I personally play games because I love them, and don't give a shit what other people think.

As far as another GTA sequel, I can't wait for another. I am one of those people who thought the whole idea of GTA was great, just the execution kind've sucked. What I mean by that is, the PS2 was not powerful enough to truly accomplish what I wanted in a free-roaming, do-anything game. Look at San Andreas for example. the game got great reviews, and tons of people seem to love it... but I couldn't even stand the damn game. The framerate, graphics, draw distance, animations... all horrible, and made it unplayable for me.

A GTA sequel on PS3 is going to give us what we should've received day one, but obviously couldn't due to limitations. A great looking game, with realistic lighting and physics, excellent character models and animation, tight controls, brutal gameplay, etc. (these are the reasons I'm also looking forward to Saint's Row)

So while I can kind've see where you're coming from, after playing the series to death, I on the other hand never bothered much with GTA and can't wait for a version that won't hurt my eyes.

You're in the minority probably. Most people have played GTA to death and I just wonder if prettier graphics going to cut it with those people if the gameplay remains the same.

Brad January 30, 2006 01:36 PM

I don't mind the idea of another GTA, just so long as EA stays far away from it. I kid, I kid.

Bert January 30, 2006 02:20 PM

I've hated every GTA since GTA3 (which I LOVED)
being an ex-pc gamer the GTAs since then have felt like nothing more than $50-60 expansion packs, which is about the dumbass-est thing ever.

matt January 30, 2006 02:47 PM

I agree with matt, and yes, i know im in the minority and don't care. I did enjoy GTA3 but the others had basically the same graphics and only looked worse as time went on, because other games were improving graphics drastically.

Brad,
You are way off on this... you are acting like a dog thats been beat to much and has lost his fight, Don't cave in to the assholes like, Hillary who would sell Chelsea to an Arab Sheik to be the next Prez. Hell, I bought a porno called "Airtite Granny" just because Playboy ran an Article(I do read them) saying all these jerks were trying to ban it for having "no socially redeaming value" Rock on Rockstar and publish what you feel is Kool.Semper Fi

kingofthenet January 30, 2006 07:25 PM

Dear kingofthenet,

When did I state that games like GTA should be banned or censored. That is what Hillary and the rest of the political goofballs want. For you to call me out on something which I didn't even state is not only irresponsible but ignorant. If you don't agree with my opinion that's one thing but to take me to task for something that I didn't even say is a whole different issue. I suggest you reread the article and actually pay attention to my words instead of putting your assumptions about me in their place. These are my views and I will state them as I please because as you know it is my 1st amendment right, the very same right that allows us to enjoy games like GTA when they are FRESH and ORIGINAL. I hope you enjoy your "Airtite Granny" porno and hope it keeps you all warm and fuzzy on those cold winter nights.

As for the dog who has lost his fight, nope not at all, I just decided to fight people like you.

Brad January 30, 2006 08:33 PM

Brad, I always knew you were a dog that was beat too much. Now kingofthenet has called you out on it. Ruff, ruff....grrrrrr.

Bert January 31, 2006 08:06 AM

In my experience, dogs that are beat too much either die or turn on their masters and kill them.

Brad January 31, 2006 08:11 AM

Brad,
The undertones of your rant were pretty clear, Take-Two should cut it's ties to Rockstar because they are a "Ticking Timebomb" and might (GASP) produce a game that will get someones panties tied in a knot.I didn't see Walmart pulling Morrowind off the shelves, because GTA:SA had some issues, and it was the "issues" that made it a Mega Blockbuster in the first place. You can't have it both ways, maybe Rockstar should make "kiddie safe" titles that no one buys?

kingoofthenet January 31, 2006 12:31 PM

Your assumptions of my undertones are pretty clear and f'n ridiculous. I did infer that maybe Rockstar was a ticking time bomb but I said that they should make a game other than regurgitating the same GTA shit over and over again like a bulimic person. If you need to look those words up, go ahead and shoot over to dictionary.com then come back to read the rest.

WTF does Morrowind have to do with GTA being pulled off the shelves...I said Take-Two could use the Elder Scrolls and Civilization franchises to help turn a profit without having to always depend on GTA to save their ass. The hot-coffee thing, I refuse to call it a mod because it was proven to be on the f'n disc, was the straw that broke the camel's back. It was not only lame but pretty tasteless as well and is not why GTA:SA was a "mega blockbuster". That whole issue didn't come about to several months later. I'm also not saying that Rockstar shouldn't make more adult-oriented games but you can do that without having to push the limits of morality and society every time. I think the guys at Rockstar are creative and groundbreaking individuals but they still haven't proven that they can make a game other than a GTA one that people have an interest in. I don't question their game-making talent, I question their diversity.

Brad January 31, 2006 12:54 PM

Truce... I agree
Except for the mod thing... to say the "Hot Coffee" thing should result in a classification as ADULT, is like saying someone drew some HARDCORE pictures in a 747's cargo hold and Kids need to be protected from that sort of thing...and should not be allowed on that flight...WTF are they doing in the cargo hold ( I will take my award now for the worst analogy possible)

kingofthenet February 2, 2006 12:09 AM

The point about the mod wasn't whether it should have changed the rating but the simple fact that it was left in there without it being at least noted in the ESRB list as "sexually explicit content". I would just think that if you had something that risque sitting in the code somewhere, of all things you would at least remember to remove it.

Truce accepted. :D
