With the summer drought almost to a close, I am finding myself in a bountiful environment of hours upon hours of previously un-experienced gaming goodness. Instead of going out and buying $60 games that I may or may not like, I have been ignoring my next-gen titles and using my Xbox 360 for backwards compatibility. What a mistake Peter Moore made when he said backwards compatibility wasn't important. Not only is it important for Microsoft, it is also important for all the Playstation 2 or Gamecube owners who missed out on some Xbox gems.
Continued after the jump...
I, being one who missed out on all Xbox games minus both Halo's and Morrowind, have been in Xbox gaming heaven for the past couple weeks. Titles like Knights of the Old Republic and Fable have kept me busy, and I've realized that I don't actually hate the Xbox. I still dislike the controller somewhat, and the big box isn't too appealing to me, but I truly enjoy playing its games on the 360 and its much nicer controller.
It's unfortunate that I'll be spending over $1000 for three gaming systems this generation, but it's almost necessary to be a gamer to the fullest, and frankly I really like all three consoles this time around. I missed out on so many games this generation, and I won't let that happen again. I wouldn't count on backwards compatibility for the Next-next gen consoles, due to the extreme complexity of the 360 and PS3, hence I will own all three, hopefully by next summer.
Maybe I'm just a stupid 17-year-old kid who plays too many games, with the eventuality of throwing away over $2000 in 1 year on two consoles. Which other than the 360 you say? Yes, I know, I have told you that I will not be buying a PS3. But, if I just so happen to have $900-$1000 lying around this November, I'll be buying a 20GB Playstation 3 with plenty of goodies. Why did I decide this? What good am I for the site if I can't do my job of letting you know how my PS3 experience is?
Besides that, I want my fix of Playstation. I guess you could say becoming a fanboy at one point in time (although those days are now over) creates an addiction, and no matter what, you will crave what you know will bring you fun. Who knew: video games = drugs. And like Andy said in the forums, "its a day 1 for me - But only for YOU people," although I have a little more personal desire for it, it seems.
But I digress; back on topic. I'm pretty disappointed in the titles that Microsoft has working with back-compatibility. Games like Riddick, Brothers in Arms and Oddworld Stranger's Wrath are all games that I personally can't play on anything but an Xbox (yes, BiA is on the PS2, but I won't touch it due to the craptacular bugs it has). I'm sure Microsoft is working on backwards compatibility every day, but unless they have some amazing stuff up their sleeves they should really put the nose to the grindstone and get as many as they can to work.
What are your thoughts on backwards-compatibility? Yay? Nay? Should we be asking for more, or should we be happy with what we can get?
Adios Esposito!
Halo 2 works! :)
That's really all I care about. Well, Halo 1 too.
Me personally, although I have never been a console gamer have considered buying a 360, but my problem is, and this is where Sony with it's line of Playstation consoles nails MS, is that only select Xbox 1 titles are backwards compatible even after, what, like 8+ months since the 360 release? I've rarely heard anything from anybody about different PS1 games not working on the PS2 and I don't think it will really be that different this new generation with the PS3, but the 360 only has selective b/c. That really sucks. Dammit I wish that they would add some MK titles and DOA:U to the 360 b/c list.
If I were to get a 360 I would of course play next-gen stuff otherwise getting a 360 would be a waste of money, but at the same time I would also want the ability to play older Xbox 1 titles on it. My reason being that I am of the mentality of consolidating all my gaming into as few systems as possible, ala emulation or if I ever get into consoles in the future, b/c. As I see it, why buy a Xbox and an Xbox 360 for two seperate sets of games when I could just get a 360 with b/c, which is just one system instead of two? I say this because it helps save physical space wherever I have to store them.
Anyways, that is just my perspective on it.
Peter Moore said "Nobody is concerned about backwards compatability" meaning everyone knew Microsoft was making it a priority, not that nobody cared about it.
BC is great! Lego Starwars and Kotor 2 have me occupied for hours on end.
At the end of the day , I dont use bc much mainly because I have a vga cable and this causes stoped most games from working.
BUT!!! when my old xbox dies and I cant buy a new one because have stopped making them, I have a bunch of games i can no longer play because ms didnt do 100% BC.
Kyle, I think you're going to see MS talking less and less about BC as the 360 approaches the 1-year mark. In fact, it's my personal belief that once we get past X-mas (this year), they will altogether stop making games backwards compatible. With the stable of quality 360 titles building and building, I'm noticing fewer people talking about older games. At some point, I think that MS will stop using resources to make the old games run on the new system. It seems to me that a console launch is really the only time that BC becomes a huge deal to many people (probably due the lack of new games).
OSVG, noboby complains about PS1 BC because the PS2's come with a built in PS1 on the motherboard. No emulation is needed. The slimline PS2's however cannot even play every PS2 game, much less be BC 100%. Unless the PS3 comes with a PS1 and a PS2 built in I don't have high hopes for 100% compatibility. This is especially true now that Sony has said the PS3 will most likely have selective BC.
I am always complaining that riddick is not backwards compatible...
one of my favorite xbox games.. period.
