Sitting down, there is nothing but hushed conversations. The crowd moves quickly, efficiently, almost reverently to their seats. Like a family going to Sunday worship, they gather and talk mundane things, looking towards the curtain, eager for it to part.
Then, the orchestra enters, and takes their seats, a melodious wave of musical tunes softly whispers to the audience: “Almost time.”
Flutes whistle through scales, violins tune, then pluck, then soar with majestic reverberations. The crowd slowly seat themselves, the hushed conversations grow quieter by the minute, as the orchestra finishes clearing its collective throat, and the conductor walks in.
The lights dim, the crowd is silent, so silent that you can hear shoes making noise on a carpet, the conductor raises his baton, the curtains open, a voice booms:
I do not fall for hype anymore, the last time I did was when I saw “Batman” in the theater and loved it. (This is the Tim Burton 1989 “Batman”, not the Christopher Nolan excellence of “Batman Begins”) Then like a Chinese food meal, the stomach digested, and I was left hungry again in less than an hour.
Once in a while, I fall for something popular, (“Lost”, “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer”) sometimes, I fall for something that no one cares a lick about (“Space: Above and Beyond”, “Firefly”), but all told, there’s a common thread between all these TV shows that I find fascination in.
I feel for “Space: Above and Beyond” because of quality characters, and writing that wasn’t seen on Television at the time. The type of show that didn’t take its audience for granted, that treated them like grown ups, who are paying attention, and understand what’s going on.
If you ever want to know disappointment, give yourself to a quality Television show, and then have it ripped away by some feckless thug in a corporate office wearing a suit I’ll never afford in this lifetime, who feels it’s his job to tell me what I want to watch.
TV became a wasteland, and while there were some high points, it was mostly low points. Even, what was the crème de le crème of Television; “The Sopranos” has gone downward, suffering the age old problem of the friend invited to dinner who stayed long past desert.
So when something clicks with me, I stick with it, till it clicks no more, until it gets so unbearable that the thought of watching gives my stomach terrible cramps, and sadness fills me over what once was great.
“Lost” comes to mind. Oh I will be there tomorrow night at 9pm to find out what’s happening on the Island, what’s up with Penelope and how did Locke, Ecko and Desmond survive the great white out, but if they don’t floor me by the opening credits, the clock of doom is ticking on “Lost” for me.
Yesterday, very very quietly, Xbox Live Marketplace updated the “Battlestar Galactica” folder with the teaser for Friday’s season premiere episode. Its maybe 2 minutes in length, and it shows me the inner feelings of each of the main characters, without a single one of them uttering a word.
To say I was floored is an understatement. How does a show with the simplest of premises manage to blow that out of the water on a weekly basis is beyond me. It was beautiful, poetic, and so full of energy, saying tons without saying a word. It was an orchestra tuning up, before the real action begins.
To those who have never watched the show, get on iTunes, or get up on Xbox Live Marketplace, download “The Story So Far” free on both services. (Click here for the iTunes direct link)
Then, come Friday at 9pm, turn on the Sci-Fi channel, and watch an orchestra put your ass into a seat, and blow away every single one of your television expectations.
Do it for yourself, not for me. You’ll thank me later. I’ll sum up with a quote from Mr. Edward James Olmos, who plays Admiral William Adama on the show:
''The last thing that I wanted to be doing was science fiction on cable television,'' says Olmos. ''But this, to me, is a real gift. I'll be in science fiction every day of my life if they can give me this kind of drama.''
I think we had a 3 hour return marathon thing on our (Canada's) Space channel. Though we get ours Saturday at 9PM and repeat at 5PM the next day. Dunno why we get it a day late. Hey at least we might be getting the channel so I can watch the show I've heard you speek so highly of. :)
Hawkes how do you feel about 24 then?
And damn my community for getting rid of Sci-fi from basic cable. Just as I was getting into their programming they replaced it with G4, bastards. So now I have to either use iTunes (which if The Story So Far is any indication, will run like shit), or go the route of torrent. /sigh
Oh and I actually like House MD for some reason, I usually hate medical shows.
Damn no sci fi channel. I have to get mind on channel torrent.
I'm much too impatient, thought I need to have all the episode available so I can watch 2 or 3 a night. This one a week lark does my nut in.
And when is "House" back on.
And has season 3 of entourage finished?
And why didnt someone tell me Lucy Lawless was in BSG, she rocks.
brain: While I was oddly titalated by Jack Baur's daughter constantly running, her getting chased by a cougar in Season 2 pretty much sealed it's fate for me.
Velrino: I've heard House rocks, but haven't had a chance. I don't remember why I didn't start watching it, but once it's a season in, I tend to wait and rent the DVD's. Sorry that your community is a bunch of fascists.
Dante of Smeg: House is on in the US, and Season 3 of Entourage is done. It was pretty uneventful actually, but it came to a relatively logical conclusion, and makes me wonder how long till the reset button will be hit. You'll know what I mean when you see it. :)
And Lucy Lawless may have the best damn part in the show. If what I hear is true, you'll see what I mean. :)
:(
Sadly, I will probably be stuck in traffic, on my way home from a conference in Winston-Salem and will miss it. *cry*
I too am looking forward to BSG on SPACE this sat. i am really pissed at XBLMP for not having the bsg content on the canadian marketplace (we Canadians get the shaft on nearly everything! Atleast it sure seems that way). What does surprise me though is that SCIFI (SKIFFY can burn in hell for SG1, you bastards! may you goto that special little hell mentioned in Firefly) is allowing SPACE to show it nearly concurently with them, normally we have to wait months if not years for new stuff to be shown!
From one BSG fan to another, that was well said Hawkes.
24 is drivel
Quick question: does this show repeat at all during a later timeslot? Looks genius, but I'm not home when it airs and other people are usually using the DVR. I'd prefer to watch it on the big screen instad of my computer.
thecactusman17,
Sci-Fi repeats it sometimes, in this case they are repeating it several times:
Sunday: 10am for 2 hours.
Sunday: 11pm for 2 hours.
Monday: 11pm for 2 hours.
Tuesday: 4pm for 2 hours and finally:
Next Friday (Or Saturday morning, depending) 3:00am for two hours.
You could also download it from iTunes.
Enjoy!
Wait, is this going to be a 2 hour thing this season? Wasn't the previous 2 seasons full of 1 hour episodes? I'm not complaining of course, but I just don't want a shortened season because the episodes are twice as long.
BSG has a strange quality to it. I usually don't think about or obsess over the show (like I do about Lost) unless I actually see a commercial for it, but while I'm watching it and about a few hours after, I just think, "OMG, this is so awesome, I can't wait for next week." Everytime I watch an episode and things start getting tense, I can't help but think, "Angry drums FTW!"
