When the week started, Sony was ever so slowly beginning to ramp up interst in its Playstation 2 launch less than a month away from launch.  "Certainly," one could reasonably begin to expect, "certainly this marks a turnaround, and we'll encounter a reinvigorated Sony showing us the best PS3 launch info we've seen yet."

Of course, that fails to take into account that Sony and logic seem to have a tenuous relationship at the best of times.

More after the jump.

First, we got crushing news in the form of yet further game delays:  one-time Sony exclusive Armored Core 4 would miss it's December launch deadline.  But only on the PS3, leaving its recently announced 360 edition to mop up store shelves as the premiere mech game this year.

Then Oblivion, that game where anyone who spent five minutes playing it on a PC would throw away their console iteration in disgust; suddenly became a non contender with the revelation that not only would other gamers get the exact same "exclusive" content, but that said exclusive content would be available a mere three days after launch.

Now, Sony's flagship launch title Resistance, Dawn of man, finds itself further emasculated from its 1080i initial announced resolution (it was only going to be 1080p at its first unveiling, and Insomniac quickly scrapped those plans) to a mere 720p without the possibility of PS3 rescaling the image.

Now, we learn that PS1 and PS2 classics won't get any sort of visual or aural facelift on the new hardware.  Mind you, even the Playstation 2 had texture smoothing abilities for classic Playstation titles.

Sony may have legal trouble with Microsoft for libel after a Sony "comparison sheet" added such necessities as the HD-DVD drive and wireless controllers to the (core) system.  I could also mention their inclusion of the Hard Drive and internet account, but those things pretty much are necessities to getting the full XBOX experience, though both were still misrepresented by the use of the Core system as the starting point.

Finally, amongst rumors suggesting that availability will be even lower than initially thought, Sony has the gall to forcibly prevent (via preemptive legal action, no less) import shops from selling any sort of Playstation merchandise to Europe ahead of schedule.  Including PSP systems, which have been available in that country since last year.

It looks that the only thing more difficult than acquiring a Playstation 3 this year will be selling one.

No worries, though.  We can always watch Talladega Nights to feel better.

Good article Josh,

I've been trying to go through all the Sony information this week and you seemed to sum it up, pretty much.

Headin October 21, 2006 01:36 AM

hmmm... sucks to be sony...

batkinson001 October 21, 2006 03:56 AM

Let us not forget that the PS3 is coming with a Blu-Ray movie which out of the box can only be watched in NTSC 480i resolution as the PS3 includes only a composite cable. So many first impressions of Blu-Ray people get will be a big ole "How is this any better than DVD?"

I know what you mean Headin. I've been trying to write about one or the other of the many Sony problems al week, but you start on one and five minutes later something even worse comes out.

Ack. Looks like I'll need to correct Resistance: FALL of Man...

We really do need a article every week titled 'This week's bad Sony news' or
'New letdowns this week by Sony' or 'Why Sony, why!? More bad news?' or 'Sony: I can give you the bad news first, or....uh wait, it's all bad news'.

While the article is great Josh, there was some good points to come out of the Sony presser. The Online portion will be comporable to Xbox Live, and be free. That's pretty huge, and could force Microsoft to follow suit.

Of course, it remains to be seen how well their online network works before judging it. It could wind up being a "You get what you pay for" type deal.

Also, for all intents and purposes, it seems the SIXAXIS controller appears to work surprisingly well, and there are some intuitive ways to use it. Finally, though the battery is internal and not replacable, Sony appears to be promising a replacement plan for the batteries.

It still sucks to be Sony, but try to remember some of the good! :)

Warning: Don't feed the Hawkes.

Seriously, though, lets be blunt: If I wanted to compile a list of the good Sony news, I'd have an awefully short story. The company that couldn't acknowledge a Disc Read Error problem outside of a class-action lawsuit is going to replace for free you $50 controller at about the same time as Hell freezes over and Lucifer shows up at the nearest church naked asking for a blanket.

And so far, all I see out of Sony's online platform is a good browser choice: Firefox 1.5. No points, no solidified multi-game network (at least, not unless XFire gets more access support from third parties).

Word that the sixaxis (I refuse to conform) is a pretty nice controller isn't too bad. Of course, it'll be a while before more than a handful of titles figure out how to use it effectively.

Reviews on the Sixaxis have been mixed. Whiel they say the motion sensing works well (which i can also attest to) it is ligth as a feather an mostly everyoen says they do miss the rumble. Also the convex triggers are slippery and cause soem problems and arent positioned very well.

Side Note: 720p is technicaly 720 lines being drawn at the same time that are 1280 wide or 921600 pixels at once... 1080i is actually only 540*1920 or 1036800 a difference of 115200... or roughly the smount of pixels on a DS screen. In other words, not a huge difference. Also many peopel preffer 720p for games as the lack of interlacing proves to be more pleasent to look at during fast motion (no trails).

Plus many xbox360 games are programmed for 720 and then upscaled on the fly for 1080, so theres no shame in resistance being 720p since we have known for a while that GTHD was gonna be the only 1080p thing out anytime soon.

Oh, and them killing Lik-sang is not doing anythign for the image. Suddenly MS seems down right cuddley by comparison... fuckers!

lupos October 24, 2006 09:28 AM

I'm so pissed at sony i would like to know how many people lost jobs from lik sang cos of sony

also how someone could still buy anything playstation after this year
