To coincide with the fifth anniversary of Halo, Bungie and Microsoft are planning big, big things: Firstly, and most importantly, a public beta of the multiplayer of Halo 3. That's right, come spring, you could be playing Halo 3. Also available will be new multiplayer maps for Halo 2 (although these are only for the 360 -- a chance to show off the graphical prowess that Halo 2 could handle?), and, come december, a 60-second ad for Halo 3 supposedly showing insight into the Master Chief's character.
While the ad doesn't really excite me (it's not showing in Euroland), the option to play Halo 3 really, really does. I'm a big fan of the Halo franchise, and I'm excited at the prospect of trying out some of the new weapons and maps, as well as seeing what improvements have been made over Halo 2's ranking system.
The only downside I can think of is price. Will Bungie and Microsoft be charging you money to try this? Are your hard-spent pounds and dollars going to be whittled away by what is, by definition, a buggy and unfinished game? Or are they going to throw a chance to play one of the most anticipated games of 2007 at you for free?
The maps, too, intrigue me. Does the fact that they are 360 only mean that we are seeing a new side of Halo 2? Is another layer of pure shine being coated on Halo 2's (somewhat dated) engine? Are we seeing the previously unseeable side of Halo 2, due to the limitations of the original Xbox? Or is it simply more of the same?
I suppose the biggest question surrounding all of this is why? Why announce it now? Why release a public beta in spring? The simplest answer is this: The PS3. The spring beta happily coincides with the European release of the PS3, and the news today happily coincides with the release of the PS3 in America and Japan. Talk about a buzz killer.
Halo truly is the best game series ever created. This can only mean good things for gamers and the games industry itself.
For Microsoft / Bungie to even consider this either means they are still shit scared of PS3 or we will start seeing a step towards true interaction between developers and gamers. Surely this is a good thing?
If all game devs let people test their game extensively before release, we wouldn't get half as much unfinished, buggy coded games as we get now.
Yes this is an attempt to take limelight away from Sony, but let's face it. It sure as Hell worked.
I'm not sure I agree with this move to make Halo 3 a public beta.
Do they really need that many people testing the game, or is it more a matter of countering the PS3?
I think it's a mixture of the two smis. The PS3, despite what many people believe, is still a severe threat to the 360's success. Microsoft needs as much limelight as possible to win this 'war'.
One of the main complaints over Halo 2's multiplayer was that it was obvious it wasn't tested enough. The weapons were unbalanced, the bash wasn't powerful enough, etc etc. Bungie doing this allows for much more in-depth reviewing of the intricacies of the multiplayer.
All the same, I'm not sure this would be a positive "limelight" to the mainstream, if this game doesn't appear "next-gen" and something like Gears of War (which it won't, in beta anyway).
Well, this does mean that bungie is on task. What we've seen is Pre Alpha...and with Beta coming, in Spring...Lets just hope it looks good for their sake.
Personally, I could care less if the graphics aren't that much better.
Well, the new trailer will be on XBL after it airs (though not clear if available in all regions).
I am truly surprised at the public beta. All positives aside, this appears to be to be a tremendous risk to do this with such a cash cow franchise - but I'm happy to see them take this risk - it shows very high confidence in the product.
Halo 3 beta?!?!?!?! This will saturate the game when it comes out; I will not be downloading it, though I may be tempted. I was also dissapointed with the screenshot; Halo 3 has a lot of work to do to catch up to Gears graphically.
