Whoops! Sony releases PS3 firmware 1.10 a day after launch to enable its own online service, which was promised to users on day one. But more goodies do appear to be in store.
More after the jump...
Other enhancements were made to disk capacity measurement, and online video saving. But the two most interesting additions are among the last to be mentioned.
First off is the enabling of third-party software. Second is the development of third-party software.
Though Sony's "Open Platform for Playstation 3" website doesn't say much, it does confirm Phil Harrison's remarks several months back that Sony planned to loosen up on its anti-homebrew stance and instead embrace the practice, where it can hopefully try and keep a watchful eye on it to prevent emulation and the other illicit activities that cause them to so fervently crack down on PSP homebrewers (much to the dismay of legitimate homebrew devs). No word yet on whether this allows players to shred in Guitar Hero (PS2 games so far appear to need a link to at least one analog-capable (Sixaxis or Dual Shock) controller to work properly).
Additionally, there is no media playback restrictions on media formats. This means that it's not just possible, but highly likely that you could fill up a third-party SATA hard drive with 1080p movies or TV shows in a compatible format (including real staples like MPEG-2 and h.264 hi-def Quicktime) and play them back at full resolution.
Playstation 3 next launches in the US this coming Friday, November 17th.

It's nice to see some good news on the PS3 - I was beginning to think there was none.
Trust me sony will do something bad to negate this.
Very prophetic, you two. Check out the story directly above this one, regarding the PS3 launch in Japan.
