Now that Sony’s “highly anticipated” and “severely delayed” super computer game system, the mighty PS3, has been released into the wilds of North America, more bad news has of course followed. As if all the reports of muggings and BB powered drive-bys wasn’t enough, some analysts are reporting that Initial shipments may be as little as half of the 400,000 Sony originally claimed. Our friends over at SPOnG.com have a quote from Jack Tretton, Sony’s co-chief operating officer in the US, stating that there will be “tens of thousands” fewer than expected.

Now, not to be too nit-picky, that could mean anywhere from 20,000(notice the "s" on the end of “tens”) to 99,000, or more, technically. Indistinct wording is common practice when bad news is involved.

I, not being any sort of professional analyst have done the best investigating I could. For you, dear reader. A quick check of my surrounding area on PS3seeker.com reveals the average confirmed stock of PS3’s to be about 85 units per major retailer. Similarly, their Wii numbers indicate around 80-100 units will be available in those same stores. Nintendo claims they will have roughly 800,000 on launch, yet the numbers don’t seem to indicate any great disparity in stock quantities.

Could this mean some stores are expecting more Wii deliveries before launch? Perhaps Nintendo isn’t being completely honest. It’s possible that the Wii will be available in more stores than the PS3. Or, most nefarious of all, perhaps I have no idea, and probably never will. Be sure to keep your eyes pealed here to see how this story fades into the mists of time once the systems are in gamers hands. Everyone will forget about the launch day riots a week from now and get back to important nonsense, like comparing reviews scores and motion sensing abilities of launch titles on completely different platforms. God I love the holidays.
